FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 22, 2024) – On the heels of the 2024 CUNYAC Women’s Basketball Championship Game, the conference is excited to reveal its end-of-year awards for the 2023-24 season, as voted upon by the league’s head coaches.
Baruch’s
Mia Castillo was voted CUNYAC Player of the Year, while Medgar Ever’s
Aaliyah Lyons was selected as Rookie of the Year. In addition, Brooklyn head coach
Megan Campbell was voted CUNYAC Coach of the Year.
Player of the Year: Mia Castillo, Baruch
Castillo ascended to one of the top players in the conference this season. An eight-time CUNYAC Player of the Week and four-time MBWA Division II/III Player of the Week honoree, she leads all of NCAA Division III in points per game (27.6), total points (744), steals per game (5.63), total steals (154) and triple double-doubles (4). Castillo produced 23 games with 20 or more points, including 10 games of 30 or more highlighted by a 50-point outing against Medgar Evers.
Most importantly, Mia led Baruch to a semifinal appearance in the 2024 CUNYAC Women’s Basketball Championship.
Rookie of the Year: Aaliyah Lyons, Medgar Evers
Lyons was a big part in the Cougar’s success this season that finished with the team’s first postseason appearance in over a decade. A three-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week honoree, she started every game this season for Medgar Evers and led the team in assists (60) and steals (54).
Coach of the Year: Megan Campbell, Brooklyn
In her first season as head coach, Campbell led the Bulldogs to their fourth straight regular season title and the program’s ninth straight appearance in the CUNYAC Women’s Basketball Championship Game.
