CUNYAC Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week
Bethany Tomaneng, Hunter
Bethany Tomaneng had a standout performance for Hunter Women’s Volleyball this week, showcasing her versatility and impact across various aspects of the game. Offensively, she achieved 10 kills with a hitting percentage of .286, committing only 2 errors out of 28 attempts. As the team's primary setter, Tomaneng registered an impressive 101 assists, averaging 10.10 assists per set with a .371 setting percentage, which highlights her playmaking efficiency. She also contributed 4 service aces despite 8 service errors, maintaining an .822 serving percentage. On defense, Tomaneng was solid, tallying 22 digs (2.20 per set) and assisting on 2 blocks. Overall, she amassed 15 points this week, underscoring her crucial role in the team’s performance on both ends of the court.
CUNYAC Women’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week
Maritza Ortega-Ramirez, York
Maritza Ortega Ramirez starred for York College in a five-set triumph against Medgar Evers (Oct. 24). In the victory, Ortega Ramirez totaled career-highs in kills (8) and total attacks (35) to go along with a solid 11 digs. In 11 contests for the Cardinals this season, the rookie is second on the team in points (44), kills (29), aces (15), and digs (73). Ortega Ramirez can improve upon her season Tuesday (Oct. 29) against John Jay College.
CUNYAC Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week (Honorable Mention)
Aleah Rafat, Brooklyn
Totaling 44 kills, 55 digs, and 6 service aces in four matches played, Aleah Rafat, a senior outside hitter began the week with 13 kills and 7 digs in Brooklyn’s 3-0 win at Old Westbury on Monday. Helping Brooklyn to their second straight win on the week, Rafat put away 18 kills and came up with a career-high 30 digs in Brooklyn’s 3-2 comeback victory over Lehman in conference play on Thursday. Despite the non-conference loss at Alvernia on Saturday, Rafat closed out her week with another double-double, finishing with 11 kills and 10 digs.
The 2024 CUNYAC Women’s Volleyball Championship will take place from November 12 through November 15. The six-team, single-elimination tournament will be hosted by the higher seed for each of the first two rounds. The opening round is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12 followed by the semifinals on Thursday, November 14, concluding with the championship match on Friday, November 15 at Baruch College.
