The newly approved Queensborough Community College Women's Soccer team will take the field for the first time in the Fall 2023 semester, representing the College's fourteenth NJCAA intercollegiate athletics team, and the seventh for women. The women's team will compete at the Division III level (non-scholarship) in the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC), and Region XV of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The College currently supports thirteen varsity teams, with nine of them competing at the NJCAA Division III level, while the remaining four compete at the NJCAA non-divisional/non-scholarship level. Women's soccer in CUNYAC currently consists of two other members, while Region XV currently boasts seven established members.
Queensborough will begin the search for a head coach immediately, with plans to appoint an individual as soon as possible in order to begin player recruitment and program preparations for the inaugural 2023 season. The women's soccer program will utilize training and competition facilities already on the Queensborough campus in Bayside that will be shared with the Tigers men's soccer team, as well as the men's and women's track & field programs.
Queensborough Director of Athletics,
Jon Hochberg stated, "As a department, we've looked in to ways to increase female student recruitment, retention, and participation. We felt that based on our location in the borough of Queens bordering Nassau County, that we would be able to cast a wide net in recruiting not only across most of New York City, but a large portion of Long Island as well. Thanks to the support of our administration, led by President Mangino, we are beyond excited to see this program become a reality. Everything that we'll need to get the program up and running will be finalized and in place shortly, as we'll look to hire a coach in the very near future to begin the recruitment of not only high school prospects, but those interested students who may already be enrolled at QCC. Ensuring the short term and long term success of the program is important from the start, and recruitment and retention is a key item to that agenda."
Vice President of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Dr. Brian R. Mitra added, "We are excited about the formation of our women's soccer program. Our Athletics program has been intentional in creating opportunities for all our students and has viewed itself as an integral part of student retention and student success. I thank
Jon Hochberg and our Athletics team for their continued hard work and support of our QCC students."
Since 2016, Queensborough has won eleven CUNYAC Championships, five Region XV Championships, five District Championships, as well as two CUNYAC Commissioner's Cups. In May 2022, the Tigers celebrated the third NJCAA National Championship in the history of the department when outdoor track & field All-American Shorn Grant won the NJCAA Division III Men's Triple Jump National Title. Not only have student-athletes excelled on the playing surface, but they have achieved excellence in the classroom during that same period of time, as proven by the 35 NJCAA Academic All-Americans, and three CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award winners.
