NEW YORK, N.Y. (Feb. 25, 2022) – The Brooklyn College Bulldogs are CUNYAC Champions once again, defeating John Jay College, 59-51, in the 2022 CUNYAC/HSS Women's Basketball Championship Game on Friday night at the Nat Holman Gymnasium at City College of New York. With the victory, Brooklyn earns the league's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship.
The Bulldogs held off the second-seeded Bloodhounds to hoist the infamous Gary Smith Trophy for a second straight season and the fourth time in program history. It's also the second straight season that Brooklyn went unbeaten (14-0) against CUNYAC opponents.
Chanel Jemmott, the 2022 CUNYAC Player of the Year, turned in a monster performance with game-highs in points (18) and rebounds (20), including 13 offensive boards. For her efforts, she was tabbed the tournament's Most Valuable Player. It was her third championship MVP citation, becoming the first CUNYAC student-athlete to earn MVP recognition on three separation occasions.
Gianna Gotti, a CUNYAC First Team All-Star, finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, six steals and three assists, while teammate and fellow all-conference performer
Ericka James added 11 points, nine rebounds. Each were named to the all-tournament team.
Neither team shot the ball well in the opening quarter. Despite shooting 19-percent from the field, Brooklyn took advantage of second chance opportunities, corralling 11 offensive rebounds to own a 13-6 lead after one period of play.
Brooklyn opened up a double-digit lead in the second quarter, thanks to seven points from James during the frame. The Bulldogs took a 29-16 advantage into intermission, capped off by a three-pointer from
Aleah Rafat.
John Jay, making its first appearance in the finals since 1997, did not go away quietly, chipping away at the margin in the third quarter to get within five (33-28) with 4:27 remaining. Brooklyn countered with back-to-back baskets to extend its lead, holding a 41-33 lead going into the final period of play.
The Bulldogs grew their lead to double-digits in the final quarter, maintaining an advantage for the remainder of the contest to clinch the championship and punch their ticket to the national tournament.
The Bloodhounds were led by 17 points from CUNYAC First Team All-Star,
Bobbi Green.
Katie Healy added 10 points, eight points and three assists, while
Ashley Zeolla contributed nine points and nine boards.
