FLUSHING, N.Y. - The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) selected York College women’s volleyball senior,
Alexandra Taveras, as the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month for November 2021.
Taveras, a native of Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic, is the outside hitter for the York Cardinals, majoring in Physical Education with a 3.63 GPA.
“It is truly an honor to be named CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month! This just shows how hard I have worked to keep up my grades and also be able to play a sport that I love,” Taveras said.
After missing the entire 2020 campaign due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Taveras led York to a convincing win on Senior Day against Yeshiva University 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-13). The product of Newcomer High School registered seven points (four kills, three aces) with a match-high 10 assists. Against St. Joseph’s College-Brooklyn, Taveras dished out a team-best six assists while adding nine digs, two kills and one ace to her stat line. For the season, Taveras led York in aces, points, kills, and assists per set.
“There were so many challenges for me this season as I was gaining experience as a student teacher during the fall semester. There were times I had to stay up late and wake up early to complete my assignments that were due, but I knew I could do it,” Taveras said. “Luckily, I hardly had to return to in person classes. When I was given the chance to return to sports, I was excited because it’s been a year and half since I was on the court, but also worried as the new mandate for the vaccine really drove student-athletes who were interested in volleyball away,” she added.
In addition, Taveras is a two-time CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll recipient and Dean’s List honoree, a dedicated student-athlete who excels within the campus community and in the classroom, all while contributing as a consistent teammate on and off the court for the women’s volleyball program.
“Alexandra is the type of student-athlete that every coach dream to have in their program. She leads by example, both on and off the court. Alexandra is the type of leader who looks to elevate her teammates in all aspects of life. She shows the utmost respect to coaches, teammates, opposing players and officials,” Assistant Coach Evelyn Florentino said.
As Alexandra prepares for graduation, she leaves some advice for future Cardinals, “My advice for future student-athletes is to learn to balance out being a student and being an athlete. Once you learn the balance, you will be able to manage everything,” Taveras concluded.
