John Jay Leads CUNYAC/USS Women's Soccer All-Stars With 8 Selections, Including Player of the Year for Healy

Flushing, N.Y. (Oct.30, 2019) - The City University of New York Athletic Conference and University Student Senate announced its women's soccer major award winners and All-Star selections on Wednesday, as voted on by the conference.

John Jay, the 2019 CUNYAC Regular Season Champions earned a league-high eight all-star nods, including Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, as sophomore stalwart Katie Healy was voted top player and Casey Sommers was named top coach. Rookie of the Year honor went to Gisselle Flores-Barajas of York College, as she becomes the Cardinals’ first-ever CUNYAC Rookie of the Year.

Player of the Year • Katie Healy, So, F, John Jay
Healy’s second year with the Bloodhounds showed her the full range of her game. She scored an incredible eight assists and 15 goals, good for first and second in the conference respectively. Her nose for the back of the net is evident with a 61% shots on goal percentage, as one in every four shots ended in a goal. The three-time player of the week recorded her best game against conference foe Brooklyn College, scoring two goals and adding two helpers to end with six points. She also drove her team to victory with game-winning goals on two separate occasions. 

“It’s an absolute honor to be selected as Player of the Year,” stated Healy. “I wouldn’t be able to accomplish anything on the field without my teammates and I am grateful to be given the opportunity to play for John Jay women’s soccer.”

Rookie of the Year • Gisselle Flores-Barajas, Fr, F, York
Giselle Flores-Barajas made an immediate impact scoring eight of the teams 20 goals throughout the season, garnering 16 points on 48 shots in 11 games. Her best game came against Medgar Evers, completing a hat trick. 

"I couldn’t have achieved this honor without my coaches and teammates.  We never gave up and we continued to work hard throughout the season. I’m thankful to be a member of the York College women’s soccer team and couldn’t be happier to be named the program’s first-ever CUNYAC Rookie of the Year."

Coach of the Year • Casey Sommers, John Jay
For the second time in three seasons, Casey Sommers was named the Coach of the Year. In her sixth season at the helm, she has led her team to an undefeated record in conference play (5-0), and an overall record of 10-6. Her teams success on the pitch has earned the Bloodhounds the top-seed and a first round bye going into the conference playoffs.
