Lehman's Aquino and Hawks' Ciurcina Earn More Accolades

Jo-Marie Aquino has been named the CUNYAC/Pepsi Women's Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of 9/9-9/15. This marks her second Player of the Week award this season. Over four games this week, the Bronx native accumulated 47 kills, 16 digs, six serving aces, and five blocks. Those 47 kills came with only seven errors on 81 attempts giving her an astounding .494 hitting percentage for the week. In a 3-0 victory over CUNYAC’s CCNY to begin the week, the junior knocked down 18 kills with no errors for a .692 percentage. Later on in the week versus Purchase, she hit .542 with 14 kills, eight digs, and four blocks as the Lightning went on to win 3-0.

Kristine Ciurcina has been named the CUNYAC/Pepsi Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the week of 9/16-9/22. The honor marks her second consecutive and third overall Rookie of the Week award this season. In two games this week, the Staten Island native tallied 34 assists, eight serving aces, and nine digs. During a 3-0 victory over CUNYAC opponent York, the setter racked up 17 assists on just 36 attempts for an outstanding .472 setting percentage while knocking over eight serving aces. The rookie standout followed that up with a 17 assist, six dig game versus Lexington Avenue rival Baruch.

Baruch was perfect 2-0 for the week, with both of their wins coming against conference opponents. Baruch defeated their arch rival Hunter College in an exciting five-set thriller, McKenzie Davidson led the team with a career-high 22 kills and 17 digs. Rebecca Peralta, was busy as well with 19 kills, five digs and three aces. Crystle Dela Cruz set a career high, totaling 62 assists and adding 15 digs to the teams amazing performance. The Bearcats will resume their schedule next Thursday, September 26, with a 7:00 pm CUNYAC match against CCNY.

The Brooklyn College Women's Volleyball team posted a 2-1 record on the week. Leading they way for the Bulldogs was senior Jillian Escobar (3.00 k/set), as well as freshmen Julia Bogdan (2.80 k/set) and Crystal Wu (5.12 a/set). Sophomore Yelizaveta Malysheva was solid defensively averaging (2.40 d/set). BC has a busy week coming up, taking on NYU-Poly (9/24), Lehman College (9/26) and participating in the Stevens Invitational (9/27 & 9.28).

CCNY went 2-2 this past week, with wins at York and against Bay Path at the Albertus Magnus Tri-Match. Both wins came in thrilling come-from-behind five set rallies. Leticia Marotti led the way with 3.69 kills per set and 15 service aces. The Beavers look to get over .500 this week when they face Old Westbury and Baruch.

The Hawks defeated the Cardinals of York College in straight-sets 3-0 (25-6, 25-12, 25-16) on Tuesday, September 17th in their CUNYAC home-opener. Taylor Kordich led with a game-high eight kills on 14 attempts while Lucia Stosic and Brianna O'Hagan both recorded five kills each. Kristine Ciurcina had 17 assists to lead the Hawks and Taylor Kordich pitched in with six. Defensively, Camille Newkirk had five digs and Christine Chen gathered a game-high eight digs for the Hawks. Hunter netted a season-high 18 aces on York. Kristine Ciurcina led the attack with eight service aces and Taylor Kordich added four aces. The Hawks dominated the Cardinals with 31 kills on 70 attempts for a season-high attack percentage of .271.
Hunter and Baruch battled to a fifth set, but the Bearcats were able to pull away late and defeat the Hawks 3-2 (22-25, 24-26, 25-19, 25-18, 12-15). Samantha Barrett led the attack for the Hawks with 10 kills on 20 attempts. Lucia Stosic and Taylor Kordich both had six kills, while Stephanie Taibe and Karolina Gajda pitched in with five kills each. The Hawks tallied 40 assists as Taylor Kordich recorded a season-high 20 and Kristine Ciurcina added 17. Hunter's Alisa Jaganjac carried the defense with a season-high 31 digs. The Hawks recorded 16 team blocks led by Lisette Martinez and Samantha Barrett. Both assisted on seven blocks while Lucia Stosic had six assisted blocks.

Lehman

Lehman ran its winning streak to seven straight, and is 9-2 on the yer, including 3-0 in the CUNYAC. The seven game streak is the longest since 2011. Junior Cari English is among the NCAA Statistical Leaders, through matches of 9/15. Sheis ranked eighth in the nation in service aces, with an average of 1.0 service aces per set. She also has the 68th highest hitting percentage in the country, with 0.345. As a unit, the Lightning have the 21st highest aces per set average out of all the teams in the nation with 2.95 per game.

MEC kicked off the week of 9/17-9/22 with a Home Opener. In front of their largest crowd in recent memories,they ultimately fell to the John Jay Bloodhounds 3-0. They also fell to Brooklyn College and Culinary Institute of America in 3 straight apiece.

The College of Staten Island women's volleyball team is off to its best start in program history, according to school record books, as the Dolphins split this weekend's competition, pushing their overall record to 4-5. CSI hosted a tri-match Saturday, where it played host to the College of New Rochelle and Wesley College. In it's first match, the Dolphins defeated CNR, 3-1 (25-13, 19-25, 25-23, 25-15), while falling to Wesley, 0-3 (23-25, 19-25, 13-25), later in the afternoon.In the earlier match, the Dolphins out-hit the Blue Angels, .123 to -0.23. CSI hit better than .500 for the first time this season, posting a .526 clip during the first set after registering 11 kills and just one error on 19 total attacks. Unlike the match against CNR, not a single CSI player was able to finish with double-digit kills or assists, leaving the Dolphins with a hitting percentage of just .045 for the match.

York lost a tough five-setter to CCNY at home on Thursday. After going up 2-1, CCNY rallied to take the next two sets to win the match. 
Freshman Carlean McCrimmon continued her outstanding rookie campaign, registering 18 kills and five blocks in the loss. For the week, she averaged 3 kills and 0.71 blocks. 
York will look to get back on track this week with a home match vs St. Elizabeth on Tuesday before traveling to SUNYIT for four matches over the weekend.
