BRONX, NY – Queensborough Community College captured the 2009 CUNY Athletic Conference/Con Edison Women’s Community College Basketball Championship tonight by defeating upstart Kingsborough Community College 60-51 in front of 218 people at Hostos Community College.

Queensborough (12-12) has now won back-to-back championships, after defeating Hostos a year ago in the title game.

Melissa Dejesus was named the tournament Most Valuable Player. In the championship game, she recorded seven points but had 13 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end in just 25 minutes of play. In the semifinals, she recorded twelve points and 16 rebounds.

Joining Dejesus on the All-Tournament team are teammate Zaconja Bethea, Kingsborough ‘s Esther Farmer and Rochelle Tomlinson, Fatima Calloway from Borough of Manhattan and Tiffani Robinson from Hostos.

In the first half of the championship game, Kingsborough fell behind early due to poor shooting and never led. The Wave made only four field goals in the first twenty minutes, shooting just 19 percent. Farmer made two of those baskets, recording seven points at the break. Queensborough shot 37.5 percent from the field, aided by ten offensive rebounds that resulted in twelve second-chance points. Bethea scored eleven of her 15 points in the first half, and the Lady Tigers took a 31-20 lead into intermission.

To open the second half, Kingsborough would hit a free throw just 36 seconds into the game before KCC went on a 12-0 run to extend the lead to 21 points. The Lady Tigers would eventually lead by 26 and endured a mild KCC comeback. But the lead was too large to overcome, and Queensborough coasted to the nine-point victory.

KCC’s Farmer led all scorers with 17 points. Tomlinson added ten points and nine rebounds. Queensborough was led by Bethea (15 points) and Katrina Robinson (ten points). Dejesus contributed seven points and 13 rebounds.
