CSI BASEBALL GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY FOR THANKSGIVING

As we all know Thanksgiving is a day to be thankful and to, of course, give! Last weekend, the College of Staten Island’s Baseball team did just that, volunteering their time at a food drive at the Dr. Theodore Atlas Foundation in Staten Island.

The Foundation collected over 9,000 pounds of turkey, 3,500 pounds of potatoes, 21,000 pounds of yams, 715 cans of gravy, 800 cans of corn, 6,336 rolls, 266,000 ounces of cranberry sauce and 470,400 ounces of juice from churches, schools and various community organizations.

After the CSI Baseball team volunteered at the Eger’s Nursing Home on Staten Island last holiday season, this year they took a different approach.
“We decided to help the Atlas Foundation because we love what they represent," said CSI Head Coach Michael Mauro.  "I wanted our team to get involved and to see what it’s like to help those less fortunate.”

The team gathered with the Foundation’s Executive Director, Kathy Zito, at Cary Avenue headquarters and helped pack the foods that would be delivered to various sites all over the Island and also helped hand out individual meals to those who came right to the Foundation’s door.

“It was a great experience for myself and for my team,” said Mauro, “I wanted my players to learn that this team is not just about baseball but it’s about the community.”
