Third-seeded Hunter defeated Baruch 1-0 today in Semifinal action in the 2009 CUNY Athletic Conference men’s soccer championship. Hunter will face top-seeded York College in the championship match next Saturday at the College of Staten Island at 1:30.
Baruch carried play early, but it was Hunter who opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Mauro Ortiz had possession in the box and flicked the ball over to Oscar Dotti. Baruch’s keeper, Nelson DiBastiano, came out to face Dotti, but Dotti knocked the ball past him and into the goal for the early lead. It was all the offense Hunter would need.
Play was very physical, with Baruch drawing three cards.
Alexandre Ilic made three saves in goal for Hunter, while DeBastiano made there for Baruch.
Hunter will face York for the CUNY Athletic Conference championship and an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Championship a week from today. The game will be a rematch of last year’s final, where Hunter beat York in penalty kicks.
