Touring Cape Town and Taking on Our First Opponent!

Early wake up call and we are on our way to discovering the city that we have come to enjoy. Everyone is excited about the new day because it is also first match day for the players. All the months of preparation and hype boiled down to this day and this time on another continent far away.

First stop, a visit to Sports Institute at Cape Town University. A stop that was unusual but intriguing. There maybe no other facility like this in the world and it is in the heart of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. We were greeted by our tour guide, he spoke to us about the facilities and services that are offered at the institute. After a quick explanation of the facilities, we asked a few questions. Most of the people wanted to know about how a place like this helps athletes to achieve their top physical level. We also found out about their extensive rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries. Questiones followed for an hour as everyone tried to find out what makes this place so special. After a healthy dose of information and we got on our bus and headed for the waterfront.

Waterfront is a beautiful area in Cape Town surrounded by architecture and of course everyone favorite shopping areas. We stopped in a local mall for a quick lunch that would carry us in to our match time. Always looking to discover new places, we pick a little Italian restaurant that served up a great meal and left everyone with their bellies hanging out. A solid meal and a quick look at the waterfront and we are ready to go to the hotel and rest up for the game. Of course, we all wanted to see more of the waterfront and the beauty around it, but time did not allow for it today. No worries, there is always tomorrow and we are going to explore more of the area that is still a mystery to us.

As we were on our way to the hotel, we got a unique look at one of the pretiest streets in Cape Town. Strand Drive, spans a couple of blocks, and presents us with the view of the city and reveals a little more about its history. Beach Drive would be a literal translation of this street, and it got its name from the fact that some of the area was submerged. Now that land is home to buildings like Holiday Inn, Convention Center, and Sheraton. As we drive further, we saw a construction site, which caught everyones eye. his will be the first ever Six Start Hotel is information given to us by our bus driver. In fact it was also visited a couple of weeks ago by the President of the United States of America George W. Bush, and Bill Gates, who were on hand for the World Aids Summit.

The bus is loaded and we are ready to get on the way to our match. You can tell its game time, everyone is focused and anxious to see our first opponent. As we step of the bus, the warm day has now shifted in to a bitter cold evening. Winds picked up and the breeze coming from the Atlantic makes for a cold weather that can rival New York in January. We are quickly off the bus and players are beginning their pre-game routine.

Its almost game time the coach gathers the team for a final meeting and the first whistle is only a few minutes away!

Our fist game is against Cape Town University Alumni team. It is not an easy match since most of the players are experienced soccer players as well as great competitors. First minutes looked like they are going to be testy for a jet lagged team from New York. Thanks to great saves from Michal Giordano and the defense in front of him, Goodwill team was able to hold of first attacks. The half did not get any smoother as both teams were struggling to posses the ball. Cold conditions made the game slower and strong wind carried the ball allover the field. Second half was a complete turnaround for the away team. The ball began to move and with that came chances to score. Unfortunately Goodwill team was not able to put away a few chances that they got and the final-result was a 0-0 draw.

Tomorrow is another day to discover our city. We are all going to do a clinic for young children in the area. After the clinic, we are going to present kids with gifts that we have all brought with us from America. Among the gifts will be soccer ball, t-shirts, and wrist- bands. This will be a great experience for the kids and will give us a new perspective on the culture of South Africa.
