Hard work prepares this month’s Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month for all he does, both on the hardwood and in the classroom. Deyquan Nesbit of Hostos Community College balances his athletic and academic responsibilities and succeeds in both.
As an accounting major, Nesbit has been holding his grade point average steadily over 3.9. On the court for the Caiman, he is striving to get his on-court performances just as steady. He has remained the team’s second highest scorer with 14.5 points per game, while shooting 45 percent from the floor. He’s also become the team’s leader in assists with 3.6 per game and second leading three-point shooter, hitting 37 percent.
When asked about his success, Nesbit summed it up simply, “I aspire to be the best at everything I do, from the court to the classroom.”
“He’s a very hard worker,” Hostos Head Coach Roy Beekman agreed. “He pushes himself to get better and it shows in his grades and his stats. I can count on him to be ready to work, and every time I send him onto the court for games, I know I will get a great and consistent performance.”
During the month of December, Nesbit averaged 15.4 points per game, with 3.3 steals and 4.0 assists as Hostos rolled off three straight wins following an early-month loss.
