CCNY’s Ashley Straughn is the CUNY Athletic Conference Player of the Week, as she led the Beavers (1-3,  0-0 CUNYAC) to the first win of the season. CCNY beat Rutgers-Newark 64-61 early in the week, then lost to St. Joseph’s College of Long Island 71-68 in double overtime.

Against Rutgers-Newark, Straughn recorded game-highs with 18 points and 11 rebounds. More importantly, it was her offensive rebound and layup with exactly five minutes remaining that put the Beavers ahead with their first lead of the game at 54-53.

In a double overtime thriller against St. Joe’s, Straughn recorded another double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

For the week, she shot 58.9 percent from the field, and made 15 of her 20 free throw attempts. Defensively, she recorded a pair of blocked shots in each game.

Straughn is currently seventh in the conference in scoring with 16.5 points per game and fourth in rebounding with 10.5 rebounds. Additionally, she leads the league in blocked shots, averaging 2.3 per game.

The Beavers will return to action on Tuesday, December 1 as they face Lehman College in a double header at the APEX. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. This is their first conference game of the young season.
