Despite John Jay’s rocky start, Vaughn Mason has been a bright spot, earning the CUNY Athletic Conference Player of the Week. The Bloodhounds (1-5; 1-1 CUNYAC) had their first win of the season, a 69-66 home decision over Lehman College, sandwiched between losses to Hunter (94-87) and Connecticut College (66-58).
Mason averaged 20 points per game, including a season-high 28 points, against Hunter. In that game, he made 13 field goals while shooting over 59 percent. He added nine rebounds and had two steals and two assists. In the win over Lehman, he led a 21-2 run to end the first half to lead head coach Devernie Winston to his first NCAA win as a coach. Mason was good for 14 points and 11 rebounds in the game. To close the week, Mason chipped in 18 points and nine rebounds as Conn College took the close decision.
Mason, who just joined the team this week, has led the team in scoring in each of his three games played.
John Jay hits the road for the next seven games, starting with trips to William Paterson and Rutgers-Newark this week.
