The January selection of the Hospital for Special Surgery/CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month truly epitomizes the spirit of being a student-athlete in the City University of New York system. Baruch senior Annelie Gregor, who was named the 2006 CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year at BMCC, receives this month's honors after posting strong efforts for the Bearcats' swim team and registering a 3.75 grade-point average in political science.
"Annelie Gregor is not only an outstanding swimmer but a terrific student in the classroom and leader - in and out of the pool," said Baruch women's swimming and diving head coach Charles Lampasso of Gregor. "She exemplifies what is great about college athletics for all her success as a student-athlete."
Gregor won all 10 events during the month of January during the team's dual-meet competitions, including a school record in the 100-meter freestyle against Mount Saint Mary (Jan. 19). She won all three of her events at Hunter (Jan. 11; 200 medley relay, 1,000 free, 500 free), and scored victories in the 50 Free, 100 Breast and the 200 medley relay against John Jay (Jan. 17). The first day of the 2008 CUNYAC Swimming and Diving Championships took place on Jan. 31, and Gregor helped the Bearcats to second-place finishes in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:51.16) and the 400-yard medley relay (4:29.17 - new school record). The Swedish native went on to win three events over the next two days of the championships, as well.
"As an international student coming to Baruch, I have learned to work hard, both academically and as a student-athlete," said Gregor. "Having a full-time job and balancing academics and athletics has been a tough, yet satisfying achievement in my career at Baruch. I want to thank my teammates, my coaches and my family in Sweden for making my dream in New York City come true."
