Continuous improvement and excellence, both on the basketball court and in the classroom, has earned Brooklyn College senior Jaclyn Cavalcante (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) the honor City University of New York Athletic Conference/Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month for December, 2007.
Cavalcante is a guard for head coach Alex Lang's Bridges, and the conference leader in 3-point field goal percentage averaged 14.8 points, 4.1 assists and 2.1 steals in the month of December. Further, her long-range marksmanship in Brooklyn's six-game stretch to close out the calendar year was demonstrated with a 14-for-29 effort on trifectas (.483). Cavalcante scored 12-plus points in each contest, including an 18-point outing (7-for-9 FT) at Old Westbury (Dec. 29) to round out the month.
The James Madison High School graduate has not lost sight of her roots, and as part of her success off the court Cavalcante spent three days per week during the fall semester student teaching at her alma mater. She carries an overall grade-point average of 3.237 in physical education, including a mark of 3.553 last semester while balancing school, basketball and student teaching.
"It is an honor to win this prestigious award," said Cavalcante, whose .456 3-point field goal percentage through games played Jan. 6 ranked 15th nationally at the NCAA Division III level. "As a senior, I truly appreciate the experience that I have had as a student-athlete, and take great pride in my ability to balance the two."
"I have seen Jaclyn mature over the past four years, and am proud to have been a part of her transformation," said Lang of the sharpshooting standout that has accumulated over 1,100 career points during her time with the Bridges. "She has grown and every aspect, and achieved great feats both on and off the court."
