Brooklyn College middle hitter Luke Heywood has been named the February 2007 Hospital For Special Surgery Student-Athlete of the Month.
Heywood, a psychology major, maintains an impressive 3.72 grade point average and earned a perfect 4.0 this past fall. On the court, the senior averaged 3.43 kills with a .319 hitting percentage in the month of February. The Bridges enjoyed a 9-4 overall mark and went 7-2 in CUNYAC play during the stretch.
“This is award is a great honor because it rewards success both academically and athletically,” said Heywood. “I strive to be a well-rounded student-athlete and exemplary citizen.”
Heywood was a First Team CUNYAC All-Star in 2006 and was named to the NECVA All-Academic Team as well. In addition, the Brooklyn native was named a 2006 Arthur Ashe Sports Scholar.
The senior currently ranks third in the league in kills (3.60) and hitting percentage (.317), and stands fifth in blocks (0.91).
“Luke is doing everything that he is supposed to be doing,” said Brooklyn head coach Andrew Woolward.
“He’s an excellent student who is on his way to law school. On the court, he’s been unstoppable and is one of the finest players in our league.”
