Safia Mian of the Baruch women's volleyball team has been named the Hospital for Special Surgery CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete of the Month for November.

Safia owns a 3.63 GPA as an Accounting Major with a Minor in Industrial & Organizational Psychology.

The setter averaged 8.84 assists, 3.15 digs, and 86 total aces in being named to the 2004 CUNYAC All-Star Second Team. She also totaled an impressive 84 assists during November's conference tournament as Baruch finished in second place. Last season, she was named to the 2003 CUNYAC All-Star First Team as a sophomore.

Safia has developed a terrific reputation for not only her terrific on-court ability and solid academic record, but for also dedicating her time to the needy.

The Queens resident is putting her accounting skills to immediate use as she volunteers during tax season to VITA, which stands for Volunteer Income Tax Preparation that provides free tax services to the needy.

She will spend plenty of upcoming time with VITA, and then prepare for a semester abroad in Dubai.

"It feels good to be honored for my work on-and-off the court during my time at Baruch," said Safia, an alum of Francis Lewis High School. "I want to sincerely thank my team for their support, especially my coach Krishna Dass, who has helped me develop as a player since I first started on the team. I have come such a long way the last three years as a player, student, and person."

"Safia is one of the hardest working players on the team and her ability to balance academics, athletics, and community service is outstanding," said Dass. "She embodies all that is terrific about being a student-athlete and is a shining star at Baruch."

The native of Pakistan plans to enter the corporate world of accounting and eventually pursue a Master's in Taxation upon graduating from Baruch.
