Sophomore standout Nyeira Gordon of the Kingsborough Community College women's outdoor track and field team was named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month for May 2019.

Gordon played a key factor in the Wave's national runner-up finish at the 2019 NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships -- a moment that she described as her favorite memory of her collegiate career.

“I was happy because there were only four girls who scored points to get us to that (second place) spot over teams of 20,” said Gordon, adding “that just showed how hard we worked.”

She claimed individual national titles in the 100-meter hurdles (14.36) and 400-meter dash (1:01.67) at the meet and ran in Kingsborough's 4 x 100-, 4 x 400- and 4 x 800-meter relays -- all of which took gold in their respective events.

Gordon is no stranger to victory. At the 2018 NJCAA Outdoor Championships, the then-freshman was a member of the national championship winning team, winning gold in five events along the way. It was an achievement that she credited to her teammates at KCC.

“Being a team player and running for my teammates and not only myself is what guided me through our championships,” said Gordon. “We all went through the same hard work and pain, so we pushed each other even in our own individual races.”

Since her freshman year in high school, running track has played a significant role in Gordon’s life; stating: “It is special to me because it gives me a positive characteristic of being disciplined and determined. Those two characteristics will take me far in life.”

Away from the track, the Brooklyn native possesses a 3.56 grade-point average. Her experiences running track is what led her to choose her major course of study -- Biology.

“I chose Biology because I am very interested in the body and being able to relate it to the sport that I do makes me feel more knowledgeable and closer to the sport,” Gordon said.

Gordon continued: "This means a lot (to be named the Scholar-Athlete of the Month). Through these two years, all I wanted was to be seen for the hard work I have been doing with this tough major.”

Gordon, who has her associate’s degree, says she will continue her studies at a four-year university in an effort to obtain her bachelor’s degree, while continuing to run track and field. She will also carry the lessons learned at Kingsborough to her next destination, stating: “The school (Kingsborough) provided a foundation, where I can now be comfortable in the next school that I attend."
