John Jay College women’s basketball freshman guard Katie Healy was named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month for January 2019.

“It means a lot to me because it shows how much work I put in, on and off the court, and it also means a lot to represent John Jay,” said Healy.

Healy, a two-sport athlete in soccer and basketball for the Bloodhounds, has been playing the latter for the last 12 years. “(Basketball) has always been a stable part of my life and I couldn’t imagine my life without it,” she said.

When asked how she balances her responsibilities as a student-athlete, the rookie replied: “I’ll be honest, at times it gets challenging, but it is my drive to succeed that helps me get my work done”. Healy attributes a lot of her success to her communication and time management skills, discipline and responsibility.

Healy has been named the CUNYAC Rookie of the Week five times this season, three of which came in the month of January alone. Additionally, the freshman was named a CUNYAC Women’s Soccer All-Star this past fall.

“Katie is the definition of a student-athlete, who works as hard in the classroom as she does on the court and field of play,” exclaimed the Bloodhounds’ women’s basketball head coach Lynda Day. She continued, “Her work ethic is through the roof as she aspires to be the best individual and teammate possible.”

The Criminal Justice major with a concentration in Institutional Theory and Practice sports a 3.80 GPA while also leading her team on the court, averaging 17.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game. She also leads all rookies in the league in scoring this season, while ranking second in rebounding.

The freshman starter picked up seven double-doubles in 11 games in the month of January, including a career-high night with 28 points and 24 rebounds in a 68-40 win at Lehman.

When she is not in the classroom, on the field, or on the court, the freshman enjoys spending time with friends and even dabbles with baking in her spare time.

Calling Merrick, N.Y. home, Healy chose John Jay because of their unique programs that allow students the capability to explore all parts of the criminal justice system.

The future criminal lawyer calls John Jay a second family and a home away from home. She explained, “I have been given a lot of opportunities and I believe it is getting me in the right path for the future.”
