Brooklyn men’s volleyball outside hitter Luke Heywood has been named the Hospital For Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the month of March.

The Brooklyn native owns a 3.66 grade point average in psychology and is a Deans List student.  The junior, who received the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award in 2005, enjoyed a sensational month on the court, averaging 5.07 kills and 1.07 blocks per game.

This past season, Heywood was named a First Team CUNYAC All-Star and was selected to the All-Tournament squad after leading the Bridges to the CUNYAC semifinals.  The Queens High School graduate finished third in the league in hitting percentage (.372), fourth in blocks (1.01), and 5th in kills (3.88).  In addition, he placed fourth in blocks and 16th in kills in the NECVA Division and was the CUNYAC Player of the Week for March 7.

“Luke is as brilliant on the court as he is in the classroom,” said Brooklyn head coach Andrew Woolward. “He has shown steady improvement over the past two seasons, and if he continues to dedicate himself and refine his skills he will be even more dominant next season.”

This past February, Brooklyn College named him their Student-Athlete of the Month.

“Volleyball and school compliment each other so well,” said Heywood.  “I take a full load of honors courses and my brain needs to relax.  I love the sport and give my best to everything that I take on.  If I weren't improving and getting something out of both school and volleyball, I would not be doing both.  I think that getting this award represents Brooklyn College's standards, which is school first and then athletics.  It is a privilege to get this award but I could not have done anything without my team.  Each kill starts with a pass and a set and each of my teammates need to do their job.  I am more excited for a chance to compete for a championship next year.”
