Brooklyn College sophomore guard Jenny Varughese has been one of the conference’s more explosive guards over the past two seasons, ranking among the CUNYAC’s leaders in a variety of statistical categories. The Staten Island Tech graduate has also started her college career as a top student, maintaining a 3.8 GPA as a member of Brooklyn College’s BA-MD program and CUNY Honors College student. “It is hard not to be impressed by her determination,” says her coach Alex Lang. “She wants to be the best at whatever she does.”
This is Varughese’s second time winning this award as she was named CUNYAC Hospital For Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month in February of 2005 for her accomplishments as a freshman. During the month of January, the Staten Island, New york native was excellent, as she made 20 three-point field goals in only 11 games. On January 9th, she helped lead her team to a comeback road win over Albertus Magnus as she converted on four second half three-pointers to give Brooklyn a 54-42 win. In a key conference victory over Medgar Evers, she played what was probably her best game of the season, scoring 15 points while dishing out 6 assists and notching 5 steals.
In this, her sophomore season, Varughese has elevated her game, averaging 11.1 points, 3.7 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game as well as converted on 33 three-point field goals in 21 games played this season. She has made her biggest improvements on defense and in limiting her turnovers, which are two key areas for a young point guard.
