Juliana Generoso
Lehman College
Senior with a 3.69 GPA in Exercise Science
Soccer Forward from New Rochelle, N.Y and New Rochelle High School

Juliana Generoso has been named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month for September 2015. The New Rochelle native has maintained a 3.69 GPA in Exercise Science at Lehman while being a key member of the 9-1 women’s soccer team.

Generoso’s story begins in Brazil, her country of birth and where she lived until the age of eight. In Brazil, soccer is by-far the most popular sport and so the fit was natural. In grade school, she played on school teams but as she approached college, the soccer was not on her mind.

“I was in contact with the coach but my plan wasn’t to play but I am so happy I did,” said Generoso. “My friend told me to just come to practice one day. Once I went, I just kept going. It was a great social thing for someone who was just entering college.”

The New Rochelle High School graduate knew that she wanted to go to CUNY for the proximity and costs but only decided on Lehman after a visit.

“I really loved the campus feel,” Generoso continued. “I was planning on studying psychology so Lehman had what I was looking for.”

Within that first year, not only did she join the soccer team but she also discovered that her passion was actually exercise science. On a friend’s recommendation, she took an introductory course and immediately fell in love. She is now looking at graduate schools in related areas like physical therapy. Fluent in spanish, italian, portuguese, and english, the polyglot has really enjoyed her time at Lehman, especially once her younger brother joined the Lightning and the Men’s Soccer program.

On the field this season, the forward is a key contributor to Lehman’s 9-1 run in September which is by-far the best start in school history. During the period, they outscored opponents an astounding 54 to 15 while the veteran scored 10 goals with at least one goal in eight of the ten contests.

The biggest win of the month came against the perennial championship contender CSI. Though she did not score, she racked up two assists as the Lightning took down the Dolphins 5-1 to sit on top of the conference.

“They had always beaten us so that game was a huge test,” said Generoso. “ We needed to prove everyone wrong and we did it.”

It will be exciting to see how she might improve in the second month with so much success already.
