Allie Bernasconi
Lehman College
Junior with a 3.55 GPA in Sociology with a Minor in Early Childhood Education
Women's Track & Field Sprinter from Beacon, NY and John Jay High School

Allie Bernasconi has been named March's CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month. The sprinter for Lehman College has made a name for herself nationally in the 400 meter dash while maintaining a strong GPA in Lehman's Sociology program.

"It's definitely a good experience because I've gotten a lot out of it," said Bernasconi about her education at Lehman. "To be a part of the CUNY system and the team at Lehman, I couldn't ask for anything more."

Bernasconi aspires to become a special education teacher in the future, which is a goal she set her sights on achieving all throughout middle school and high school. While majoring in Sociology with a minor in Early Childhood Education, the junior has maintained an impressive 3.55 GPA.

"I'm really attracted to the city because I want to become a teacher and work here in the City. Lehman has a lot of opportunities with internships, so that's why I chose to come here."

The track star actually took a three year hiatus from competitive running because she wanted to focus on school and didn't think she would go anywhere in the sport. "It's always been a hidden passion of mine," said Bernasconi. "I ended up joining the team and I'm really glad that I came here and did that because I missed it."

On the track, Bernasconi was perhaps one of CUNYAC's most successful athletes in the winter season. The junior was recognized as the CUNYAC Performer of the Year for her performance all season in the 400m dash and 4x400m relay events. After winning the 400m dash at the CUNYAC Championship by over five seconds with a time of 56.85, Bernasconi set her sights on a national crown. At the NCAA Division III Championships in Winston-Salem, North Carolina last month, the Beacon, NY native improved upon her CUNYAC Championship time and ran the 400m in 55.74 seconds. She led over second place by 1.41 seconds and, along with teammate Adrianna Wright, became the first CUNYAC athlete to win a National Title since 2007. Bernasconi also earned All-American honors for her outstanding performance.

Look out for Bernasconi to continue impressing both on the track and in the classroom the rest of this spring and into next year.
