Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund Prep

Yuliya Orkis has been named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month for the month of September. The Women's Tennis star excels in the classroom and has proven to be one of the best all-around scholar-athletes CUNYAC has to offer.

Orkis has been named the CUNYAC Scholar Athlete of the Month in the month of September every year since 2012. That dominance makes the Brooklyn native one of only three CUNYAC student-athletes to ever be named Scholar Athlete of the Month on three separate occasions. All have only happened in recent memory with fellow Bulldog Stephanie Caravello and Baruch's Steven Coniglio receiving their third honors last year. The senior boasts an impressive overall GPA of 3.918 while majoring in theater and acting.

"I am honored for the continued recognition CUNYAC gives me," said Orkis. "They support me in my hard work and efforts everyday."

Athletically, the Bulldogs standout has been dominant throughout her career and is undefeated in singles play this season. Competing at #1 singles and #1 doubles, Orkis has amassed a 4-0 record in singles this year and a 3-1 record in doubles. The three-time CUNYAC Player of the Year has been voted Preseason Player of the Year and Player of the Week three times already this season. In her career, she is 20-0 in CUNYAC matches and 40-1 in singles play overall, with her only loss coming in straight sets at last season's USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championship semifinals against Ithaca College's Cristina Nunez.

Yuliya Orkis's academic performance has kept her on the Dean's List at Brooklyn College each of her 7 semesters, which is something that has been a proud accomplishment for the senior. "It really is a challenge to balance my degree and the team, along with the life I lead outside," said Orkis. "The acknowledgment is very appreciated."

Look for this Bulldog to continue succeeding both in the classroom and on the court in her senior year as she looks to complete the Player of the Year sweep and earn her first CUNYAC Championship.
