Kristen Markoe
Hunter College
Graduate Student with a 4.0 GPA in Physical Therapy Doctorate Program
Women's Basketball Forward from Staten Island, NY and Staten Island Technical High School

Kristen Markoe is January's CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month, beating out her brother Ryan, among others, for the award. The forward from Hunter College has made a name for herself on the court for years playing for the Hawks' women's basketball team while maintaining a strong GPA as both an undergraduate and now graduate student.

"It's awesome. It's an accomplishment," said Markoe. "Not many people get to do [win the award more than once] so I am excited."

The Physical Therapy major aspires to complete her doctorate program and some day own her own Physical Therapy Clinic. The dedicated graduate student maintained a 4.0 GPA in her first full-semester as a student in the program and made the Dean's List all 8 undergraduate semesters. As an undergrad, she finished with a 3.781 GPA in Psychology in the Macaulay Honors College at Hunter.

Her younger brother Ryan Markoe is also a standout basketball player and scholar-athlete as a Macaulay Honors College student at Baruch. Ryan has a 3.94 GPA while majoring in finance.

On the court, Markoe currently leads the CUNYAC in scoring with 20.2 points per game and is also third in CUNYAC in rebounds with 10.5 rebounds per game. The graduate scored her 1,000th career point in a game against FDU-Florham and also became the first women's player in Hunter history to record 1,000 rebounds as well. In her career, she has earned the 2011 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year, 2011 D3Hoops.com Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year, three ECAC DIII Metro Women's Basketball All-Star honors (2011, 2013, 2014) and two CUNYAC First Team All-Star honors (2012, 2014).

For the month of January, Markoe averaged 19.5 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game while playing 33.8 minutes a game for her team. She started the month with a 31-point and 7-rebound performance while shooting 81.3 percent from the field against Medgar Evers. Markoe followed up that game with a 38-point 10-rebound game while going a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line in a game against York College. The Staten Island native has been a big lift, leading her team in almost every category including points per game, rebounds per game, assists per game and free throw percentage. In Hunter's 11 games for the month, Markoe has scored in double digits 9 times and had a double double 7 times.

She ended her month with a Hunter victory over John Jay where she notched her 13th double-double of the season. Markoe finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds which were both team highs. That effort, when combined with one other, earned her January's last Player of the Week honor.

Look out for Markoe to continue impressing the rest of the regular season and into the postseason both on the court and in the classroom.
