Maxwell Berkow
Macaulay Honors College at CCNY
Sophomore with a 3.88 GPA in Chemical Engineering
Men’s Soccer Goalkeeper from New York, NY and Stuyvesant High School

Maxwell Berkow is October’s CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month. The goalie from CCNY is a proven star on the soccer field and also has an exemplary academic record making him a proud representation of CUNYAC scholar-athletes.

Berkow, the New York City native, has accumulated an impressive GPA of 3.88 while studying the demanding major of chemical engineering on a full scholarship for the Macaulay Honors College. This has landed Berkow on the Dean’s List and allowed the sophomore to earn the honor of being awarded the 2014 CCNY ECAC Scholar-Athlete Merit Award.

Regarding the challenges he faces balancing his difficult major with athletics, Berkow said, “It takes up a lot of time and it will cut into your sleep, but I think it’s worth it because soccer for me is a calming experience where you can get rid of your stress from schoolwork. I find that I tend to do better in school when I’m playing a sport like soccer.”

Beneath the crossbar, Berkow has been an effective goalie leading the conference in shutouts with four overall. Berkow also owns the best average for goals against when facing CUNYAC opponents at 0.851. Additionally, the sophomore is ranked in the top-5 on the leaderboard for several other categories including saves and save percentage.

In the month of October, CCNY had a record of 3-3-1 and Berkow totaled 44 saves in those 7 games for the Beavers with a save percentage of 0.875 and a goals against average of 0.830. The Beaver’s October was topped off by the goalie’s 6.2 saves per game, which was good enough to save 88% of the shots on goal.

In his CUNYAC career, Berkow has earned several athletic honorable mentions including three ECAC Metro Defensive Player of the Week awards, three CUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week awards, two CUNYAC Rookie of the Week awards, one ECAC Metro Rookie of the Week award, and the 2013 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year award. He was the 2013 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year and was named to the CUNYAC First Team this season.

Look out for Maxwell Berkow continuing to succeed in the classroom and on the field next season.
