For the month of March, Hunter College's men's volleyball sophomore Alexandru Barbulescu has been named the CUNYAC/ Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month. This is the first time the sophomore has won the accolade.
"I don't think I'm the most intelligent person in the world," said Barbulescu of his honor. "It's just hard work. It means alot to me because I feel like I work hard every day and I'm really glad I've been rewarded for my efforts."
Boasting a 4.0 GPA in the Macaulay Honors College with Dean's List recognition, Barbulescu majors in Biology and aspires to become a doctor. In his free time, the Bronx High School of Science alum volunteers with the Research Group at Cornell Medical where he studies specific genes and DNA.
The 6'5 middle blocker from Bucharest, Romania has been an integral piece of the Hawk's offense- currently leading the squad with a .358 hitting percentage and 1.87 kills per set average. Barbulescu also ranks second on the team in blocks and service aces per set, with a 0.57 and 0.23 average, respectively.
"Alex is a fantastic kid," said Hunter men's volleyball coach Ray Bello. "He is the hardest working player I've coached in a long time. He has an urge to learn and soak everything in that he can. Alex has the potential to do great things on and off the court."
For the month of March, Barbulescu compiled 58 kills (.437 attack percentage, 2.24 kills per set), 19 total blocks, 10 digs and 6 service aces in 24 sets played. The sophomore was a key piece of the Hawks 8-3 month and also, with his efforts, Hunter secured second place in the CUNYAC regular season standings.
