3.781 GPA- Psychology
Senior- Staten Island, NY- Staten Island Technical High School
For the month of January, Hunter College's women's basketball senior Kristen Markoe has been named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month.
A four-year, full-merit Macaulay Honors College student, Markoe has earned a spot on the Dean's List all of her eight semesters as a Hawk. Boasting a 3.781 GPA, the psychology major is currently applying to graduate school for physical therapy doctoral programs.
Athletically, the Staten Island native has overcome and excelled. Her athletic accolades include CUNYAC Rookie of the Year (2012), CUNYAC first-team All-Star (2012), first-team CUNYAC All-Tournament team (2012), D3Hoops.com Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year (2012), ECAC Division III Metro Women's Basketball All-Star Team, All-Met Division III Women's Second Team, Hunter College Women's Basketball MVP (2011 and 2012), Hunter College All-Tournament MVP (2010, 2011 and 2013) and Bridgewater State University All-Tournament MVP (2013).
Last season, Markoe tore her ACL in a preseason scrimmage and was unable to compete. After ten months of rehab, the guard/forward returned as a senior and on January 24th, 2014, she scored her 1,000th collegiate career point in just 64 games played.
In January, the Hawk averaged a double-double with 15.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Markoe has been an integral part in Hunter's current 4th place CUNYAC standing with a .583 mark.
"Markoe can do anything she sets her mind to," said Hunter head women's basketball coach Vana Loukisass. "When composed, she can dominate you both on and off the court. She works extremely hard and it's evident because of all her accomplishments."
The women's basketball captain is also a true community member. In her "free" time, Markoe constantly volunteers around campus and gets involved with activities such as Project Happy and the Special Olympics. Furthermore, the senior is a psychology lab assistant and currently shows her leadership as the Vice President of Hunter's SAAC.
"I take everything in strides," said Markoe. "Sometimes, you have to deal with obstacles and overcome adversity on and off the court."
