Oren Kozlowski has been named Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month for October 2013. The Baruch College Men's Soccer Vice Team Captain has a 3.865 GPA while pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Finance.
"I want to thank my two coaches for stressing success not only on the pitch, but also in the classroom," said Kozlowski. "It is great to be in an environment that helps build a well-rounded student-athlete which Baruch has helped me to become. I want to be a role model for not only student-athletes at Baruch but throughout CUNYAC."
In five CUNYAC games this month, the 2012 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year notched 10 goals and two assists. Over those games, Kozlowski notched two game-winning shots while the Bearcats outscored their opponents 20-3 and won all five contests. He began his month versus Medgar Evers scoring six goals and one assist. The Booker T. Washington grad followed that performance with an assist in a close 2-1 win over the Lightning of Lehman. Later on, Kozlowski scored the decisive goal in a 2-1 win over Lexington Avenue rival Hunter. He finished the month with a hat trick, including the game-winner, during a 3-1 win over York.
"Sports has helped develop my ability to set and obtain long term goals," continued Kozlowski. "It requires hard work and persistence in order to achieve them. Athletics has also been important in developing teamwork. It has taught me how to align my individual objectives with that of my team, which is a crucial mind set to have in the business world."
Last season, he was named an All-American by the Jewish Sports Press despite only being a freshman. During that same season, the forward led Baruch to both a CUNYAC Championship and NCAA Tournament berth. The Oklahoma native remains undefeated in CUNYAC play throughout his career.
"I am very proud of Oren and his work ethic is unsurpassed," said Baruch Athletic Director Ray Rankis. "It is evident from this award that he has done a great job on-and-off the field."
Academically, his outstanding GPA has kept him on the Dean's List and earned him consistent CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete honors. Kozlowski certainly represents one of the best scholar and athlete combinations in the conference.
In Kozlowski's free time, he is an active member of both the Wall Street Club and the Finance and Economics Society and a selected participant of The Rising Starr Sophomore Program at Baruch College. He also finds time to volunteer at the United Nations where he helps organize and facilitate UN Youth events. This winter the sophomore is interning at a consulting firm as he aims to take advantage of the proximity to New York City.
On why he came to NYC from Oklahoma, "I wanted to study finance and New York offers great exposure and access to some of the largest financial institutions. Baruch was particularly appealing because of its prestige in finance and quality education."
