For the month of January, York College’s Women’s Swimming and Diving standout Sandra Shamburger has been named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Women’s Scholar-Athlete of the Month. Despite being a 37-year old rookie, she has had one of the best years of any York swimmers.

A native of Germany, Shamburger has been granted the CUNYAC Swimming Rookie of the Year award. Alongside her prominent swimming accomplishments, the freshman has been pinned to the Dean’s List with a perfect 4.0 GPA. While her major is technically undecided, it is merely a technicality as she takes the prerequisites for majoring in PA, Physician’s Assistant. Her two-hour daily commute and current work as an EMT emphasize her desire to work in the medical field.

"It's really hard,” said Shamburger. “It's taken so much effort to do both but this is what I want.  I want be a physician's assistant"

In the pool, the first year swimmer did not lose a single event in a dual meet in January, placing first in eight individual events. The York student-athlete has been recognized as having one of the best years of any swimmer in the history of her school. In the CUNYAC Swimming & Diving Championships, Shamburger placed fourth in the 50 yard freestyle, finishing ahead of her younger counterparts.

Her athletic prowess and agility have allowed her to post notable times in her conference. Now a resident of the Bronx, Shamburger has the second best 100 yard backstroke time, third-fastest 50 yard freestyle time, and places fourth in the 100 yard freestyle when compared to other CUNY swimmers.

Only a freshman, Shamburger has a heap of accomplishments, and much more academic growth to look forward to in her coming years at York.
