For the month of December, Hunter College’s women’s swimming and diving standout Charlotte Collazo has been named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the month. The sophomore free/breast stroke competitor is a force in the pool, community and classroom.
A childhood education major boasting a 3.73 GPA, Collazo, in her spare time, participates in the Adventist Christian Fellowship Collegiate Summit, which is an annual event that gathers young college and graduate students around North America to reach out to the community with programs such as tutoring, soup kitchens, mentorship and raising funds to assist underprivileged families. Collazo is also a member of the Advent Hope Chior.
"Swimming has really kept me determined and focused academically. It's an honor to represent Hunter College with this distinction," said Collazo. "My coaches and parents have always motivated me to swim hard and do well in school. I've really worked hard to balance the two so I can do my best in both, because they are both very important to me. The girls on my team have a lot of heart when they swim, so they also encourage me to succeed. We're more like a family then a team, so I give them a lot of the credit. I would like to share this distinction with them as well."
Collazo has racked up stellar times against Manhattan, Lehman and FDU this December and has been of vital importance to the Hawks’ 2 wins throughout the month.
“Charlotte is one of the hardest working swimmers I have ever coached,” said co-head women’s swimming and diving coach Andrew Netti. “She is willing to do anything for the success of her team and is a great teammate to her fellow swimmers.”
Collazo was also named a CUNYAC All-Star as a freshman and a CUNYAC Rookie of the Week.
