Ponce, who boasts a 3.858 GPA as a media studies major and Macaulay Honors student was exceptional for the Hawks in the month of March. The Bronx native led the team with 21 hits, including five doubles, six home runs and 27 RBI all while batting a .404 clip. Her on base percentage of .407 and slugging percentage of .846 were also best on the team.
In 16 starts, Ponce has managed six multiple hit games and six multiple RBI games to emerge as one of the Hawks’ dominant offensive threats at the plate. In a recent 18-2 victory over conference foe Lehman College, Ponce went a season best 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of home runs—including her second grand slam of the season, en route to driving in a career-high eight runs.
"Sophia is a great student-athlete. Not only is she an exceptional student but a great team player, always willing to go wherever we need to help," said Ralph Moroni, the Hawks' softball head coach. "She always voluneteers to catch or help warm up other pitchers, despite having just played a game. She's very dedicated to our team and to leading by example."
