For the month of February, the CUNY Athletic Conference Kingsborough Community College’s Kristin D’ Chiutiis Co-Scholar Athlete of the Month. The women’s basketball player maintained a 3.5 GPA in her major and had impressive performances on the court as her team competed for the CUNYAC Championship in February. In her rookie season, D’Chiutiis is among the top performers of the KCC Wave women’s basketball team averaging 11.0 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.0 assists and picking up 1.7 steals per game. During the month of February, D’Chiutiis and the rest of the Wave squad made their way to the CUNYAC/Con Edison semifinal games were they were able to edge out Hostos for another chance at the CUNYAC women’s basketball title. In the championship game, the freshman guard scored 13 points, shooting 50% from the field (6-for-12), grabbing five boards in the 62-53 win over BMCC. With the win, D’Chiutiis’ and her teammates are the first Wave team ever to bring home the women’s basketball title for Kingsborough. The physical education major also earned the CUNYAC Rookie of the Year award for the 2011-2012 campaign season. “My coaching staff and I focus on and promote academic success for all of our student athletes. We stress the importance of education as well as athleticism,” said Coach Ronnetta Copeland. “When a student athlete is strong in academics they always have a solid foundation to rely on.”
