Freshman Yuliya Orkis earns her third weekly award that Orkis has won this season, as she was named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Player of the Week, for the week ending September 25th and the league’s rookie of the week, for the week ending September 11th.
Orkis went 3-0 for the week playing at first singles, while also going 2-1 for the week at number one doubles. She played an instrumental role in Brooklyn’s 6-3 upset victory over reigning conference champion Hunter College last week, that catapulted the Bulldogs into first place on the CUNYAC leaderboard. Hunter’s loss also snapped its 103-match win streak over CUNYAC opponents, which dated back to 2000.
In the win over Hunter, Orkis defeated Flavia Guidi at number 1 singles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Orkis also helped the Bulldogs to a 5-4 win over York College on October 10th to keep BC undefeated in conference play. Playing at #1 singles, Orkis downed Valerie Roland 6-0, 6-0 and at #1 doubles teaming with Diana Rafailova, the duo got the better of Nicole Jones and Amba Chanoine, 8-5.
