City College of New York’s Yanique Newman was named CUNYAC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for her stellar play last week.
Newman – who is in her second season as a member of the Beavers – earned the accolade for her tremendous effort against the York College Cardinals this past Thursday at Randall’s Island. In City College’s only match of the week, the Abraham Lincoln High School product recorded a goal and an assist in the Beavers’ 4-0 shutout victory over the Cardinals. Following the announcement of her earning top conference honors for the week, CCNY Head Coach Donald Manfria gave his thoughts.
“It’s great to see Yanique get recognized for her hard work,” Manfria said. “Every conference match we have is important, and she truly gave a great effort against York College. We have many challenging matches ahead of us, and hopefully we’ll see more of the same from her in those contests as well. I’m very proud of what she’s been able to accomplish for us thus far this season.”
The 5’6" midfielder and Brooklyn, NY native has been the prototypical table-setter for City College thus far on the 2011 campaign, as she has earned seven points on the year, a total that ties her with two other women for the team-lead. Newman has recorded three goals and an assist this season, while taking a team-high 27 shots.
The Beavers will return to action on Tuesday afternoon as CCNY takes on Montclair State University in a non-conference match at the No. 85 field at Randall’s Island. Start-time is scheduled for 4:00pm
