Brooklyn College freshman Yuliya Orkis has been named the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC)/Hospital For Special Surgery Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week, for the week ending September 25th. This marks the second time this season that Orkis has been honored by the CUNYAC, as she was named the league’s player of the week earlier this year (Week 1). In Brooklyn’s 9-0 win over conference and borough rival Medgar Evers College last week, Orkis defeated her opponent Roneke Browne, 6-1, 6-0, at number 1 singles. She also picked up a win at number 1 doubles with her partner Maria Sanz, as the duo beat the pairing of Brown and Ja’Net Goodwin, 8-0. Orkis also played a vital role in the Bulldogs’ 5-4 victory over non-conference rival Farmingdale State College. Orkis opened the match at number 1 doubles teaming with Liana Rivkin, as the tandem edged out the duo of Jessica Sickles and Kristina Rossano, 9-7. Orkis would later take home another win, defeating Sickles at number 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
