City College of New York’s Natalie DeSabato was named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Player of the Week, as she was a key component in helping the Beavers record their first victory of the season. In City College’s only match last week, the 5’3 junior recorded a win at No. 1 singles by defeating Staten Island’s Sophia Varriano in a classic set 6-4, 6-3. CCNY trailed 2-1 in that match after doubles play, but rallied to capture five of the six singles sets – including DeSabato’s win – to grab a 6-3 victory. CCNY head coach Donald Sylva gave his thoughts on his top player receiving CUNYAC praise.
“Natalie is expected to be a big contributor for us this season, and she showed a lot of confidence this past Saturday in her No. 1 singles match against Staten Island,” Sylva said. “She is a hard worker and I believe this is only the beginning of the good things that we’re going to see from her this season.”
