Brooklyn College Softball freshman Stephanie Caravello (Outfield/First Base) has been named the City University of New York Athletic Conference / Hospital for Special Surgery Co-Scholar-Athlete of the Month, for April 2011.
Caravello had a strong April helping the Bulldogs lock up the #4 seed in the 2011 CUNYAC/Pepsi Softball Championships, where Brooklyn would go on to advance to the double-elimination round of the championships for the first time in program history.
During the month of April, Caravello started in all 14 contests, hitting safely in 10 of those games; while beginning the month with a six-game hitting streak. She posted a .390 (16-for-41) batting average in April with five doubles, two triples and a homerun, to go along with 16 RBI and 14 runs scored. Caravello also had an on base percentage of .435 and a slugging percentage of .683; while going a perfect five-for-five in stolen base attempts.
“It’s a great honor,” said Caravello, upon hearing of her award. “I’m surprised. It feels great to be recognized and acknowledged for the hard work that I’ve put in this season.”
“Stephanie is a very team oriented player,” said head coach Bill Dumont. “She was one of our most consistent hitters all season.”
Caravello has registered a perfect 4.0 GPA in the classroom, while also committing time to two varsity sport programs at BC this year. Along with playing on the Softball team, she was also a member of the Women’s Swimming & Diving team this past winter, which was reinstated this season following a six-year hiatus. Similar to the diamond, Caravello found success in the pool, being named a 2011 CUNYAC All-Star as a member of the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay team.
Being a multi-sport athlete at BC is no stranger to Caravello, as she did the same at Leon M. Goldstein High School . “It’s second nature to me when it comes to balancing school work and athletics. I’ve been doing it my whole life.” Caravello will no doubt continue to excel in both worlds over the next three years in Brooklyn.
