NEW YORK, N.Y. (Feb. 14, 2018) - Trailing 72-59 late in regulation, No. 3 seed Kingsborough Community College made up the difference in the final 3:49 to shock No. 2 seed Hostos Community College, 78-76, in the semifinals of the 2018 CUNYAC/Army ROTC Community College Men's Basketball Championship Wednesday at BMCC Gymnasium.
The Wave, who will advance to Friday's championship final for the first time since 2010, used a 15-2 run in a near three-minute span to tie the score at 74-all with 54 seconds left.
"Well, we tried to keep our heads in the game and kept playing aggressive," Kingsborough sophomore guard
Micaiah Goosby stated. "We knew we could come back because we had been in that situation before. We clicked at the right time."
Goosby
ignited the rally with a pair of free throws and capped it off with a game-tying lay-up. He ended the contest with 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting, and added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Kingsborough eventually led 78-76 in the final seconds, but Hostos had the final possession. Running one final play, the Caimans turned to sophomore guard
Malvin Nieves, who put up a step-back three-pointer that missed the mark to end the game.
In the first half, the Wave started off on the right foot, opening the contest on an 11-3 run. Sophomore forward
Selvaughn Legall netted a trey and a lay-up in the stretch. Sophomore guard
Travis James got the scoring started in the game with a fast-break lay-up just 59 seconds in.
However, Hostos chipped away at the early Kingsborough lead and eventually pulled the game even at 18-18 with 8:14 left before the intermission. Freshman forward
Gary Sylvester sparked the comeback with back-to-back baskets. James added a pair of lay-ups.
From there, the Wave and Caimans exchanged five more tied scores and five lead changes, before Hostos'
Nfakaba Cisse sank a long-distance three at the horn to give his team a slight 36-35 cushion at halftime.
In addition to Goosby, four other players finiished in double figures for Kingsborough. Sophomore guard
Erhunosere Uwuigbe scored a game-high 18 points in 30 minutes off the bench. Legall amassed 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. Adams posted a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore center
Asaph Charles had 10 points and six rebounds.
Freshman guard
Nakeem Hamilton led the Caimans with 16 points, four assists, three steals and two rebounds. Sylvester finished with 15 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard
Jonathan Loria added 13 points, four assists, three rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Nieves recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, in addition to five assists and four steals.
Kingsborough will advance to Friday's (Feb. 16) final against No. 1 seed Borough of Manhattan Community College at 8:30 p.m. at BMCC Gymnasium. All of the action will be carried on Facebook Live.
