The CUNY Athletic Conference announced the 2015-16 winners during CUNYAC StudentsFirst Rewards Night at MCU Park on Friday, July 8th. The night’s events were presented by U.S. Army ROTC. Selene Ahuatl of Brooklyn College and Francisca Hernandez of Queens College were awarded the top prizes of free tuition for a year courtesy of Municipal Credit Union and CUNYAC. Nine additional winners received prizes, including various technology and CUNYAC prize packs. Each winner and a guest received tickets to watch the Brooklyn Cyclones take on the Hudson Valley Renegades from the MCU Suite at the ballpark.
“I was hoping that I got the tuition but I’m thankful for the opportunity. The laptop is great too because it’s a tool I can use for school,” remarked York College student, Christopher Todd. When asked about his feelings towards the StudentsFirst Rewards Program, Todd had this to say, “being a part of CUNY is great. The experience I had allowed me to go to events I would not have previously and it’s helped me gain pride in being a CUNY Student.”
Free tuition winner, Selene Ahuatl, was “extremely surprised and very excited” when it was announced that she had won the top prize. “I think it’s a great opportunity for students to participate and get involved. It’s great to support all of CUNY’s student-athletes.”
The CUNY Athletic Conference started the StudentsFirst Rewards program as an initiative to create an immersive experience for students who attend CUNYAC tournaments or play in a CUNYAC/MCU Intramural Championships. To earn points, CUNY students must attend CUNYAC Championship venues. Students use an online ticketing system prior to the event and check in at the ticketing desk upon arrival. Only current CUNY students are eligible for prizes and the name on your CUNY ID must match the name registered online. The points are totaled following the end of the semester and the winners receive some incredible prizes.
The StudentsFirst Program has proven to be a success these past four years with increased attendance at a number of the CUNYAC Championships and having representation from all CUNY campuses, not just CUNYAC member schools. The top ten point-getters this year averaged 474.5 points, making this year’s the highest average yet. Program participation increased greatly from last year and we hope to continue increasing program participation for the upcoming 2016-17 season.
The competition has improved every year and with the program continuing to build, it will be more and more important to get to every event you can, so pay attention to cunyathletics.com for information on where to score points.
