The 2015 CUNYAC/Army ROTC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships took place on Sunday, May 3, 2015 at the Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island. CCNY grabbed the lead early, collected points often, and never left a doubt that they would become the 2015 Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Champions. They finished with 217 points to win the 2015 title over second place Hunter, who finished with 150 points.
“The women’s performance today was truly amazing,” said CCNY head coach Hugh Reid. “I think the ladies were hungry and wanted to be champions.”
The first event to be completed on the day was women’s shot put. CCNY’s Ashley Beaver out-threw the rest of the competitors by over a meter, recording a distance of 12.13m to take first place. Charlena Mackey of Medgar Evers placed second with a throw of 10.97, followed closely by Hunter’s Ashley Haynes’ 10.96m toss.
In the hammer throw, Beaver once again led the four-year field with a throw of 40.65 meters. Caitlin Padmore of York was second with a 30.89 meter throw, and Danielle Buckley of Lehman’s 29.14 meter toss was third.
The discus throw featured Beaver destroying the field by over 10 meters as she finished with a distance of 36.62. Danielle Dunn of York threw for 26.45 meters, and Makita Ellis of CCNY placed third at 26.08 meters.
The best throwing performance of the day came in the Women’s Javelin event, where York’s Caitlin Padmore threw for a distance of 38.69 meters. Teammate Danielle Dunn finished more than ten meters behind Padmore with a throw of 28.62 meters, and Ashley Haynes wound up in third with a 25.83 meter pitch.
CCNY occupied the top two places in the women’s long jump event, as Leah Dawkins and Zyare Brown finished with distances of 4.89m and 4.63m, respectively. Toshawna Adams of Hunter rounded out the top three with a 4.51 meter jump.
Dawkins once again captured a gold medal when she won the triple jump event with a distance of 10.23 meters. Nastassia Ewart of Medgar Evers trailed closely with a distance of 10.10 meters, followed by Zyare Brown of CCNY with a triple jump measuring 9.79 meters.
Kristy Carlin had the best high jump height at 1.54 meters, Zyare Brown placed second at 1.44 meters, and Toshawna Adams of Hunter had the third highest jump at 1.39 meters.
The Hunter Hawk duo of Deborah Ramirez and Alexa Kluepfel paced the field in the women’s 10k event. Ramirez ran the race in 45:02.58, and Kluepfel completed the race with a time of 50:06.34. Katelynn Kozak finished third with a time of 50:40.82.
Ramirez grabbed another medal in the 800m run, finishing second with a time of 2:30.31. Her time trailed only Melissa Paredes of CCNY, who ran the race in 2:24.75. Rasheedah Ryhmer of Medgar Evers finished third.
That same pairing finished first and second in the 1500m run, only reversed. Ramirez grabbed gold with a time of 5:07.67, and Paredes finished in 5:20.24. Norma Santos of Hunter placed third.
Ramirez totaled 38 points individually on the day, winning three races and finishing second in another. For her efforts, she was named Tournament MVP.
“I pushed myself for my team,” said Ramirez. “I wanted to be a role model for them and I wanted to be there for them. Everything I put out there was for them.”
In the 400M hurdles, it was Melissa Paredes once again taking the gold with a time of 1:11.25. Alexandra Martinolich was second from Hunter with a time of 1:13.15. Leandra Haynes recorded the third place time of 1:13.88.
The 4x100m relay title was won by the CCNY ‘A’ team composed of Cassie Gibbons, Zyare Brown, Cathenia Murray and Leandra Haynes. The foursome ran the race in 50:59, beating out second place Medgar Evers’ 51.33 and York’s 52.43.
Adriana Wright of Lehman broke the CUNYAC Championship record in the 100M hurdles with a time of 13.64 seconds, breaking the 13-year-old record of 14.16 seconds. Zyare Brown finished second at 17.36 seconds, and Almeda Spahija of Hunter was third at 17.40.
Wright continued her dominance in the 100M Dash, finishing in 12.07 seconds and well ahead of Sciancia Metelus of Medgar Evers, who ran the dash in 12.65 seconds Cathenia Murray of CCNY was third at 13.12 seconds.
She took another gold medal in the 200M dash when she ran in 24.75 seconds. Sciancia Metelus of Medgar Evers placed second with a time of 26.04 and was followed by Keyanna Miller’s time of 26.73.
In the 400M Dash, Keyanna Miller of Medgar Evers took the gold medal with a time of 59.32 seconds. She finished ahead of CCNY’s Cassie Gibbons, who ran in 1:00.21 & Leandra Haynes, who ran in 1:01.94.
The victory was CCNY’s fifth in school history.
Medgar Evers and York tied for third place on the female side with 87 points apiece.
