Queensborough’s Caffrey and BMCC’s Richardson Earn Top CUNYAC Honors

CUNYAC Community College Women’s Volleyball presented by Pepsi

CUNYAC and Pepsi are proud to announce the 2015 Community College Women’s Volleyball All-Stars. Alanna Caffrey of Queensborough had been named CUNYAC Player of the Year while her coach, Jason Demas, earned Coach of the Year. BMCC’s Kayshawna Richardson was named the top rookie while Bronx Bronco Yeidy Montes de Oca was the sportsmanship winner.

Alanna Caffrey of Queensborough earned Player of the Year after helping lead her team to a CUNYAC Championship.  The sophomore has excelled for the Tigers, earning various awards such as Region XV Player of the Year and NJCAA All American.  Caffrey was determined to win a championship for Queensborough, giving them their fourth in school history.

"This award means a lot to her because it completes a sweep of all of the important awards in her career," said her coach Jason Demas. "She won Rookie of the Year last year, and this year she was able to win a CUNYAC championship and win Regional Player of the Year."

BMCC’s Kayshawna Richardson was named the Rookie of the Year after being among the best players in the conference across categories. For the year, the freshman was 2nd in service aces per set at 0.77, 3rd in blocks per set at 0.76, and eighth in kills per set at 1.68 with 60, 59, and 131, respectively.

Jason Demas earned his fourth Coach of the Year award in five seasons of the award’s existence as he once again coached the Tigers to a CUNYAC title. Over those five seasons, Demas had led the Tigers to four regular season titles and three CUNYAC championships including sweeping both this season. Queensborough went 17-3 this season while having an undefeated 8-0 CUNYAC record.

Yeidy Montes de Oca was named the Sportsmanship Winner after portraying ideal behavior of a student-athlete on the court.  Lesly Acosta of Queensborough, Stephanie Hahn of Kingsborough, Johanna Palma of Hostos, and Kaina Bazard of BMCC have all been named to the Sportsmanship Team.
