Flushing, NY --- Brooklyn College junior third baseman Danielle Maresca (Brooklyn, NY / James Madison) has been named the CUNY Athletic Conference / Hospital for Special Surgery Scholar-Athlete of the Month, for the Month of April, 2010. Maresca, an Early Childhood Education major, currently holds a 3.6 cumulative grade point average.
Along with being an all-star in the classroom, Maresca was named to the 2010 CUNYAC All-Star First Team for the second straight season, as she was also a CUNYAC Softball First Team All-Star for the Bulldogs in 2009.
The Brooklyn native had a remarkable April, posting a .500 batting average for the month, going 32-64 at the plate with eight doubles, a pair of triples and five home runs. She also scored 20 runs and drove in 21 RBI. Her slugging percentage of .922 and on-base percentage of .571 were both tops on the team. She also improved in the field, with a .926 fielding percentage playing the hot corner, up from .892 last month. Maresca started all 22 games for the Bulldogs in April, with the team going 9-12-1, 3-5 in CUNYAC, after losing their ace.
“Maresca added to her game in April with a new found power. She never ceases to improve her game,” stated head coach Bill Dumont.
Maresca played a vital role in guiding Brooklyn (16-17-1 / 7-7 CUNYAC) to its first winning season in the last four years, en route to clinching the fifth seed in the CUNYAC Softball Championships. The Bulldogs, on the strength of their overall season, would also earn a berth as the seventh seed in the ECAC Division III Metro Softball Championship, where the squad lost on the road in the quarterfinals in early May.
"It is an honor to be recognized by CUNYAC for such a prestigious award,” said Maresca. “To be acknowledged for all the hard work in the classroom and on the field makes it all worth while. I would like to express my appreciation to all my teachers and coaches past and present who have helped instill in me the rigorous work ethic that is important to strive for as a student-athlete."
