BROOKLYN - Left-handed pitcher Victor Gonzalez pitched a complete-game three-hitter with 14 strikeouts, while teammates Sean Smith and Joel Feliz notched three RBI apiece Wednesday afternoon at KeySpan Park, as the second-seeded Queensborough Community College Tigers captured their record 12th City University of New York Athletic Conference Community College Baseball Championship with a 7-3 victory over top-seeded Bronx.
Gonzalez, who allowed seven walks and hit two batters while throwing 88 of his 158 pitches for strikes, really beared down when he got into trouble; Bronx (12-17) hit just 1-for-10 with runners on base in the contest.
Meanwhile, Queensborough (13-26) was very opportunistic on the base paths, as it was successful in 11 of its 19 runner-advancing opportunities and took advantage of five Broncos miscues to score six of its seven runs of the unearned variety.
Queensborough broke the game open for good with a four-run second inning, with Feliz (2-for-4; two-run triple to center field) and catcher Jonathan Valentin (solo home run off the left-field scoreboard) providing the loudest hits in the frame.
The Tigers upped their advantage to 5-0 in the third inning, when Smith's one-out triple to right field plated Luis Herrera.
Bronx pulled to within a 5-3 score in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Steven Martinez (1-for-1, 3 BB) came home on a bases-loaded walk, Emmanuel Cedano came home on a double play, and Yensy Carty came home on an outfield error.
Queensborough pushed across one run with some timely clutch hitting in the top of the seventh, as Smith's (3-for-4, BB) two-out triple to left-center plated Herrera to push the Tigers' edge to 6-3.
The Tigers once again used some two-out offense to add its final run of the game in the ninth inning. Joaquin Curiel worked a two-out walk, and stole second base. The extra base proved to be crucial, because Smith then blooped a single to right field, pushing the QCC edge to the 7-3 final margin.
Victor Lopez took the loss on the hill for the Broncos, as all five runs he let up were unearned. He went 5.2 innings, scattering five hits and one walk while fanning four Queensborough batters.
